How many types of watch glass are there?

What types of watch glass, advantages of each type of glass?
Currently, there are several main types of watch glass as follows:
– Sapphire glass: The most expensive and most scratch-resistant type of watch glass
– Mineral glass: This type of glass is cheap but cannot resist scratches when rubbed or collided.
– Acrylic glass

1. Mica glass (Acrylic glass)

- In fact, this is not glass but a type of transparent synthetic plastic, this type is often used in hompage models or old watches such as Poljot, Omega hompage... because this type of face has natural transparency, looks quite beautiful. In addition, the convex surface - a characteristic of Mica glass - helps to enhance the face of the watch, the feeling of the watch face is quite close and classic, a point that many watch players love.

2. Sapphire glass (Sapphire glass)

This is a type of transparent glass with a hardness only lower than diamond on the hardness scale (about 2000 VK, diamond is 10000 VK). Therefore, it has very good scratch and impact resistance. Very good but does not mean perfect, they can still be scratched when you rub a diamond on it or rub sapphire on sapphire or the edge of a rice leaf on the sapphire glass will be scratched. Sapphire is divided into 03 small types as follows:

Thin coated sapphire:

This is a type of glass that is usually coated with a thin layer of sapphire. This type of glass is brittle and easily broken when impacted even very lightly. Because of its nature, glass is usually the least hard of all types. This type is often used for cheap imitation watches. When used for a while, it gets scratched because after a few months of use, the sapphire layer fades away, leaving only regular glass. And at that time, just a light stroke is enough to scratch it immediately.

Thick coated sapphire:

This type is similar to the above type but is coated thicker so it can be used longer before being scratched.

Sapphire block:

- This is the best type of sapphire glass, with a hardness second only to diamond. This glass has extremely good scratch resistance, can grind concrete without scratching. Usually only genuine watches have this glass installed. Because this type of glass is quite expensive.

- The higher the hardness, the better the scratch and impact resistance. Some people think that sapphire glass is brittle and easy to break, but that is not true. Sapphire glass has the best impact resistance among all types of glass if the same size.

3. Mineral glass

- Mineral Glass is actually a regular glass, which is less hard than Sapphire glass (400 VK), so it is more susceptible to scratches and breakage, but has the advantage of being easy to polish like new.
- Mineral glass is cheap, so it is quite commonly used for mid-range watches such as Casio, Orient or Citizen. Because it is cheap, people often make thick glass, which helps its impact resistance better than a thin sapphire.

* Note for use:
- A watch with a scratch-resistant sapphire glass is very good, but no sapphire glass is perfectly scratch-resistant, so you should not throw or toss the watch into the drawer every time you do not use it, but it is better to store it carefully or wrap it in a soft cloth for the watch. The more careful you are, the more durable and scratch-resistant the watch will be.
- Genuine watches, even if they use sapphire glass, are thick and of high quality, so they can be used for a long time before being scratched.
- For watches with too many scratches and cracks, you should replace them as soon as possible because those cracks and breaks can cause dirt to stick deep into the engine or watch hands, reducing its accuracy due to resistance.
- If you keep your watch with other jewelry, you should store it separately in a place with a soft surface and designed specifically for watches, because if you put them together, it can scratch the watch or other jewelry. Especially the glass surface, the stone edges of other jewelry, they are materials that are incompatible with sapphire glass.
Wish you use and preserve your beloved watch well.
